A Letter From the Editor

Firsts are overtaking the country. For the first time in American history, an African American is going to be President. A Presidential candidate took a woman as a running mate. And for the first time the Tampa Bay Rays made it to the World Series. As these firsts sweep the nation, we are also experiencing them at Marian College.

On October 25, 2007 President Elsener announced that Marian College would become The Marian University. President Elsener said, “Marian College has dramatically evolved over the past 70 years, and becoming a great Catholic university in the heart of one of America’s greatest cities is the next logical step.” In addition to becoming the first Catholic University in Indianapolis, developing its first speech team, and hiring its first provost, Marian is celebrating many more firsts in its ever-growing athletic programs.

September 8, 2007 just over 100 student athletes stepped onto Pike High School’s turf field for the first Marian College home football game. The game drew nearly 3800 fans for the 2 p.m. game and started a still-running history for the first-ever Marian football team. The team had another first on October 27, 2007 when it scored its first victory of the program’s history, beating Taylor University 24-14.

And now another team of Marian’s athletic program has experienced several firsts. The Marian College Women’s Soccer team grabbed their first ever Conference title Tuesday October 28, 2008 beating Spring Arbor University, 1-0. The ladies not only won the coveted title in one of the most competitive NAIA conferences, but they also beat Spring Arbor and the University of St. Francis for the first time in the program’s ten-year history. Finishing their regular season and conference play, they ended with their first-ever undefeated record. The Knights enjoy home field advantage for the MCC tournament, again for the first time.

As our small, but growing campus, will continue to experience these firsts, so will the world around our small microcosm. Everything we have accomplished here at Marian College has positioned us to move forward. Marian will continue to move forward, continue to be an important part of Indianapolis’s community, and will continue to experience new and exciting firsts in its upcoming years. This position we find ourselves in here at Marian is very similar to the position of our country. Everything Barack Obama has accomplished in the past year as a presidential candidate has positioned him to move forward. Suddenly it’s no longer just our small community that is on the move and making history, it’s our entire country.
