Top 10 Dates for the Cheep College Student
By: Kirsten Sordelet

As the year continues into the realm of midterms, our grades are not the only thing we are worried about dropping; it’s our bank accounts! It’s such terrible timing. People are getting to know each other and love is in the air at Marian College. But how in the world can you entertain and impress that special someone with only enough money to afford Ramen Noodles and gas. Well, I have 10 great date ideas that would impress that hottie from history class and save you a few dollars to splurge on Easy Mac.

Picnic in the Eco Lab:
Right behind this beautiful campus of ours lies a rustic adventure of winding paths and wooded ponds. This time of year the leaves are turning and crisp air is luring everyone outside. Show your sweetie you like to do more than just lie in bed and throw a blanket down in the grass lands of the Eco Lab. Plus, picnics are always thoughtful and romantic; defiantly a crowd pleaser.

See a play in the Civic Theater:

We are lucky enough to have a great theater right here on our campus. With shows ranging from $20 to $30, you can whisk your special someone away on a sophisticated date without breaking your bank. This month’s feature is the drama, Golda’s Balcony.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art:

Everyone is looking for an intellectual. Prove your parents wrong and walk into a museum without being forced. With everything from art and fashion to cultural and scientific themed exhibits, there’s something for both guys and girls. The best thing is that admission is free! You’ll both impress your date, and learn something new with them.

Go on a bike ride:

Although our campus is so close to the busy city of Indianapolis, we are still surrounded by a lovely, scenic environment, great for exploring. Grab your bikes, take a trip down to the canal and enjoy some fall weather and easy exercise with your significant other.

Take a trip to Brown Country:

One of the most beautiful places Indiana has to offer in the midst of the biggest environmental crisis the world has faced, is just a short trip from our campus. Brown County is truly something to see. Both romantic and fun, a trip for the day will bring you two lovebirds closer together. Run with the bike idea and pack up a picnic! Changing up the scenery is always important.

Dinner dates are overrated:
Take your date out to lunch. Most restaurants offer a lunch special opposed to their pricey dinner menus. You can save some cash and still have the rest of the day to hang out. It’s important to keep things interesting and not repetitive.

Adopt a fish:
Of course it sounds corny; that’s a good thing! Getting to know someone involves getting to know his or her’s personality. Fish are only a few dollars at the pet store. Have fun picking out a home and name and build a bond between the two of you. Besides a fun date, it’s a really cute gift idea!

Go to a Marian College football game:

With an excellent record this year, the Knights are on fire. Marian students get into the games free so take your date to a football game and support your classmates. The weather is beautiful and the games are exciting. Join the crowd and show off your cutie at the same time.

Make your own movie theater:
Movie theater tickets are way too expensive these days for a college budget. Lucky for us, there’s a Blockbuster right down the road. Make some popcorn, buy a few candies and sip on sodas with bendy-straws. Remember: corniness is okay! And don’t worry about movie choices, the classics are always the best way to go. You can never see Super Troopers too many times.

Go on a photo shoot:
This idea is also good for double dating. Grab a digital camera and show off your personality. Run around campus taking fun pictures of each other and together. Once you’re done, you can send them to Walgreens and print off your favorite ones. Having pictures of each other will be very important too… if all these ideas go well!
